Humanitarian Relief Options Designed Around Your Situation
When someone has been the victim of a crime, abuse, trafficking, or unsafe conditions, immigration isn’t just a legal issue — it’s a matter of safety, stability, and rebuilding your life. Humanitarian relief exists to give survivors a path toward protection and independence.
At Rebecca Kitson Law, we walk you through these options with patience and clarity. We take time to understand your story, explain each step, and help you move forward with support that feels steady and human — never rushed or overwhelming.
Humanitarian cases are often emotional and complicated, but you don’t have to navigate them alone. We’re here to help you understand your options and take each step with confidence.
Humanitarian Programs We Handle
U Visas (Victims of Certain Crimes)
For people who were harmed by certain crimes and helped law enforcement. A U visa can provide work authorization, protection, and a future path to a green card.
Situations that may apply:
– You were harmed and contacted the police.
– You spoke with investigators.
– You need safety and stability after what happened.
T Visas (Survivors of Trafficking)
For people who were forced, threatened, or manipulated into dangerous or exploitative situations. A T visa offers protection and a path to rebuild your life.
Situations that may apply:
– Someone pressured or forced you to work or stay somewhere.
– You were threatened or controlled.
– You escaped or need protection now.
VAWA (Victims of Domestic Abuse)
For spouses, children, or parents of abusive U.S. citizens or residents — allowing you to apply safely and independently.
Situations that may apply:
– You feel scared, controlled, or threatened at home.
– Your partner uses your immigration status against you.
– You need a private, safe way to apply without their involvement.
Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS)
Protection for children and teens who cannot safely live with one or both parents due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
Temporary Protected Status (TPS)
For individuals whose home country is experiencing unsafe or unstable conditions, offering temporary protection and work authorization.
How We Support You Through the Process
1. We listen first.
You can share your story at your pace. We explain which protections apply and what you may qualify for.
2. We build a strong, clear case.
This includes personal statements, supporting letters, records, and evidence that explains your experience.
3. We explain everything simply.
You will always know what’s happening, what to expect, and why each step matters.
4. We stay with you from start to finish.
Humanitarian cases can take time — but you’ll never go through it alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a police report for a U Visa?
Not always. A police report helps, but we review what evidence exists and what can still be obtained.
Can I apply for VAWA without telling my spouse?
Yes. VAWA is confidential. Your spouse or partner does not receive notification.
What if I don’t have “proof” of abuse?
You don’t need one specific type of evidence. We help you gather statements, texts, photos, or other documents that support your case.
Do humanitarian cases come with a work permit?
Many do. It depends on the type of application and the stage of your case.
How long does the process take?
Timelines vary. We give you a realistic estimate based on your situation and keep you updated.
Can my children or spouse benefit from my case?
Often yes — depending on the type of relief. We review your family situation carefully.
What if I’m scared to talk about what happened?
That’s completely normal. We move at your pace and create a safe space to share what you’re ready to share.
Can I apply for humanitarian relief if I’m already in another immigration process?
Sometimes yes. Some people may qualify for more than one option. We help you understand the safest path forward.

I have known Rebecca professionally for a number of years now. I have had the pleasure of meeting her in person a time or two, but I know her best from our mutual participation in some online forums of immigration lawyers where we can ask each other questions. You can tell a lot about a professional by the types of questions they ask - how well they have researched ahead of time, how nuanced the questions are, and even how they respond to others' questions. I have seen Rebecca ask excellent, well thought out and well-researched (by her, ahead of time) questions over the years, showing me that she's a brilliant lawyer who wants the very best for her clients. I have also witnessed her responses to others' questions over the years. Not only are her responses helpful and importantly, accurate (not every lawyer's answers are right!), but her authentic compassion always shines through. I am choosy in who I refer others to, and I never hesitate to refer to her. I'm grateful to call her a valued colleague.Posted on Victoria GentryTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
